Full-time mountain living gives you the real experience. A weekend cabin gives you a wonderful escape. They are different dreams, and both can be great.
What full-time life adds
Full-time living is the ordinary week. Where will you buy groceries? Where do you work? If you commute, drive the route you would actually use, in the weather you would actually drive. If children are part of the household, look into schools, childcare, and activities for that community. If medical care matters, make that part of choosing the location. Mountain communities have local care, and a particular hospital or specialist can mean a trip.
Snow belongs on that list too. Look at the roads and the driveway you will use. Current highways stay on Caltrans QuickMap and winter access. If the job happens from the house, internet and cell service at that address are on working remotely.
Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, and Crestline each have their own shopping routines. You can shop locally and still make some trips down the hill. Delivery can change with the address, the weather, and access. Cyndi’s mom, Loretta: plan the shopping before a major storm, and spend an ordinary Wednesday here. Mountain living includes that ordinary Wednesday.

Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Crestline, and Big Bear feel different once you stay.
Both dreams
Cyndi’s answer: full-time is the real experience. A weekend cabin is a wonderful escape. Both can be great.
What a weekend cabin needs

Many people buy a mountain house as a second home. Tell your lender and your insurance professional how you intend to use it. While you are at your primary home, the cabin still sees snow, freezing weather, outages, maintenance, and the need for someone to check it.
Learn where the water shuts off. Understand the heat. Ask a qualified professional about winterizing that plumbing. The driveway is usually you or someone you hire, including the weeks you are down the hill. House prep before a storm is on winter and storm prep. Parking and the driveway are on driveways and parking. Lake Arrowhead houses used between visits are on second homes for sale.
Picking the community for each
For a weekend cabin, Cyndi starts with where you are coming from and what you want when you arrive. A quiet wooded weekend and a winter of skiing can point to different towns. For a full-time home, those same miles become part of ordinary life: groceries, gas, medical needs, hardware, and work.
Lake Arrowhead can feel like a wooded private-lake community. Big Bear can feel like a larger place with a public lake and skiing. Running Springs and Crestline can feel like smaller mountain towns. Spend a day in more than one of them. The side-by-side questions are on which mountain community, living in Lake Arrowhead, and living in Running Springs.
